"You're coming off like a controlling boyfriend," she glared.

"I'm not your boyfriend, Mads. I'm your lifemate. And I'm your Alpha."

"Wait, so you're not my boyfriend?"

"Not the way you understand it, baby. I'm a werewolf. We do things different."

After getting kicked out of her trailer, Maddy finds herself homeless in a desperate situation. She's forced to move in with Gareth, an Alpha werewolf who's been her fantasy crush for five years. There's an age gap, and until a week ago, he was way off limits.

Now Madeline Donovan has to confront the fact that she might be a werewolf, too. She doesn't want to be a wolf shifter, but when an enemy pack issues an Alpha Challenge against Gareth, she finds herself thrown headfirst into his world. As Gareth's lifemate, the Alpha Challenge puts her at risk, too. If the enemy Alpha wins the fight, that means he wins the right to breed with her. Maddy struggles to find her courage and embrace her first Change, all to protect herself and her new life with Gareth.

Excerpt: Nowhere to Run

Maddy saw the heat in Gareth's eyes. For some reason, it scared her. He was part of a violent world that she didn't understand, and she was under his roof, in his power. How could she trust him, after everything she had witnessed that weekend?

Maddy leapt up to her feet without thinking. She must have taken Gareth off guard, because he didn't react immediately. She lunged across the living room, heading for the front door. She didn't know where she was going, but she needed to go.

He was faster than her. He overtook her in two bounds and slammed the door shut as she started to open it.

"I figured you'd run again, little wolf girl."

Maddy trembled, her back pressed to the door as his big body leaned over her. His scent filled her nose, potent and masculine. Delicious heat flared between them. She grew unexpectedly shy when she met his gaze; she couldn't hide her physical reaction to him. Her sudden, burning arousal. His eyes dilated as he gazed down at her. Then his hand found her neck. His thumb feathered along her jaw.

"You are a brat," he murmured in a dark voice.

He had thick, strong hands, used to working on cars and handling guns. He could easily snap her neck, but he cradled her head gently. Then he leaned down and bit her lip. He left a trail of little bites across her cheek, then teased her earlobe with his lips. She drew in a shaky breath as her face grew flushed.

"I know you don't understand how this works," he growled against her ear, sending a delicious shiver down her neck. "But I'm your Alpha, sweetheart. You're the little one, I'm the big one. Stay beneath me. I'll keep you safe. I'll teach you how to be a wolf."

"You're not my keeper, Gareth," she gasped.

"I am now, babygirl. Where else are you gonna run?"
